have speculated that what was advertised as a peaceful expedition was anything but. Rumors of a new age of resource wars in the

Code-named OPERATION HIGHJUMP, the expedition consisted of 4700 men from the
U.S., Britain, and Australia, aboard thirteen ships with twenty-three aircraft, on what
was officially called the US NAVY ANTARCTIC DEVELOPMENTS PROJECT 1946-47. The
mission was billed as a scientific and informational expedition to one of the last
“unknown” environs on Earth. Before setting sail, Admiral Byrd held a press
conference on November 12 to dispel the rumors circulating, stating, “When this
expedition was first talked about, uranium wasn't even mentioned. The statement that
this is a uranium race for atomic energy is not correct.”

battle of World War II as the victorious Allies defeated the final Nazi outpost on Earth.
